<h2 style="text-align: center;">
Girl's Weekend Away To Arizona - </h2>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess</h2>
When I was in my sophomore year of high school, my family had to move to Arizona from California. Can you just imagine my teenage angst? My father would happily tell you about my full out tantrum on the floor. Yup. It all worked out in the end. I earned my Bachelor's, Master's, met my husband and found my two best friends forever. Those crazy girls up there.<br />
<br />
In the last decade there has been two weddings, lots of bridesmaid dresses, several job changes, moves out of state and 6 babies born between the three of us. Life has changed! It hasn't been easy for us to stay in touch, but we try and each time we're together it's like those last two decades were a blink.<br />
<br />
It's been two years since we had a girl's weekend and that is too long. We booked a stay at the <a href="http://www.fairmont.com/scottsdale/">Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, </a>a massage at <a href="http://www.fairmont.com/scottsdale/spa/">their spa</a> and made the small request to see a movie at the theater that didn't have a cartoon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the first day of our vacation we went to the spa. We had found an awesome deal on the signature journey massage on<a href="http://www.travelzoo.com/"> Travelzoo</a>. The massage was amazing and such a perfect start to our trip. With the massage package, we were given a day's pass for the whole spa - which is huge! There are several soaking tubs, saunas and an inhalation room (a quiet, dark room that has the air deeply scented with eucalyptus) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My favorite though was the adult only roof top pool. It's quiet and the pool is full of bed sized floats. We spent a good amount of time enjoying ourselves chatting and catching up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That delicious shrimp salad was walked to my poolside chaise. It was amazing! I gobbled and enjoyed it within minutes. Then spent the remainder of the day lounging, dipping into the pool and sipping my fancy drink. Yes, yes it was amazing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another one of our favorite events at the Scottsdale Princess was their techno party at the pool. At 8pm the lights came on, the DJ started spinning tunes and we slid down their two giant pool slides. We had so much fun and are so eager to come back with our children - they would have gone nuts!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And it wouldn't be a trip, unless I brought a bit of work with me. Had a ton of fun shooting <a href="http://www.sweetjennybellebakery.com/">"cookies in the wild"</a> and then of course gobbling them down! How fun is this cactus cookie in the pool?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Avoid Arizona in the summer? Um, no. The deals are hot, the pools are cold and the memories are amazing! Such a fabulous trip.</div>

<br />
Hi all! The Bakery opened in August and it's been a fun blur since. I have opened a new site for<a href="http://www.sweetjennybellebakery.com/"> Sweet Jenny Belle</a> - you'll find ordering instructions, blog posts on baking and more.<br />
<br />
This blog is still active, just a bit more quiet. I'll continue to post non-baking related ideas here.<br />
<br />
XOXO,<br />

<a href="http://sweetjennybelle.bigcartel.com/">The bakery is live</a>, but quite limited in what is shown. I'll mostly be doing custom orders, so please email or call if you would like to place an order. I'll add more general listings to the site in the next month.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A friend of mine recently asked me if I could make her some Lego logo cookies. But I couldn't just make logo cookies, I wanted to make Lego heads and building blocks and more! And I wanted to try a new cookie roll-out recipe. I do love sugar cookies, but there are so many flavors out there to try. These were done with a mini chocolate-chip and they are so delicious, it maybe my new favorite!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sweet Jenny Belle Bakery opens in just a few weeks! So excited - lots of prep and experimenting. My husband took the kids to Inside Out last week and they loved it. Have you seen it? Who was your favorite emotion?<br />

I have decided to re-open my online bakery. I'm excited and busy with filling out paperwork. I will be listing treats online, at local shows and in the process of trying to work with some local food trucks.<br />
<br />
While I'm waiting to get all my licences in order, I needed to make a few dozen cookies for Father's Day. I tried a few ideas earlier this month and loved the superhero theme the best. My husband and dad are truly heroes to my kids!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had read a few times that the Bell Canyon trail is a fun one to do with kids. When I posted that I planned on going, I received other news. Some warned it's too steep, it's too dangerous - don't do it with young kids. But it's hard for me to give up a plan. I knew that if we started and I felt that it was too much, we could always turn around. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8Pmt0gdTe8feZRTfAaDT6MxsQt1hBwNnpOt55VXrvGpswZtObQXXfYlbrKC6OvmlAI4hPN4SRl-k_V4uAxHUIIQj5UaxKdg04DR9TnPMyGbUPnlX5rJWd_AxPgPWT4nT9Bneh8ToSB8/s1600/IMG_5494.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8Pmt0gdTe8feZRTfAaDT6MxsQt1hBwNnpOt55VXrvGpswZtObQXXfYlbrKC6OvmlAI4hPN4SRl-k_V4uAxHUIIQj5UaxKdg04DR9TnPMyGbUPnlX5rJWd_AxPgPWT4nT9Bneh8ToSB8/s640/IMG_5494.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We hiked the <a href="http://alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/bells-canyon-trail">Lower Bell Canyon from the Boulders Trailhead</a>. This is low in the valley and there is little shade. We were hot! Plan to do this hike in the early morning, late afternoon or on a cooler day. My 4 yo was quite unhappy with the amount of sun we hit.<br />
<br />
It is steep for the little ones, they truly earned some hiking boots on this trip. They were able to do it without much concern for their safety, but I knew they were challenged. The trail can be narrow, so this would be a good time to explain hiking manners and etiquette with your kids.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyyqwOnIKa9gtTa9iQMaB_iT2h7MdHLIhHVkrsAFCZv83GuikQUdBVnUMmfTk8hYMsuestPh_ONCYbiKK6GoaC-ouCibvRSppkoJ4CZb-6URgD8aLxDg6QpzQ080yOXqWOchQyrcDsx8A/s1600/IMG_5496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyyqwOnIKa9gtTa9iQMaB_iT2h7MdHLIhHVkrsAFCZv83GuikQUdBVnUMmfTk8hYMsuestPh_ONCYbiKK6GoaC-ouCibvRSppkoJ4CZb-6URgD8aLxDg6QpzQ080yOXqWOchQyrcDsx8A/s640/IMG_5496.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
My kids are always happy with a hike that includes water! Bell canyon doesn't allow dogs or swimming - leave the suits at home. It does however allow fishing at the reservoir. When they are a bit bigger, this would be such a fun place to fish with them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjThKjitgnS_ZPiubJaSxM5yFGiWUuxx5-3bBMvc9qKVGDzlu1wZdGdhTJKuF_KsAcDX1c3Mfi0aBivyl-4MgKqPCkIZVXbnM-E76WhAoXDAHKh2MBCZZgXztpRrZCE1waua4GjOraGofU/s1600/IMG_5497.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjThKjitgnS_ZPiubJaSxM5yFGiWUuxx5-3bBMvc9qKVGDzlu1wZdGdhTJKuF_KsAcDX1c3Mfi0aBivyl-4MgKqPCkIZVXbnM-E76WhAoXDAHKh2MBCZZgXztpRrZCE1waua4GjOraGofU/s640/IMG_5497.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is no way that children younger than 4 could do this safely in my opinion. I strapped my 2 yo on my back until we reached the reservoir. There were times that hiking with him on my back was tricky, but never too difficult. I did see an adventurous new mother with a very young baby strapped on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Beautiful views, but not much wildlife - another hiking prereq for the kids. Though they were quite proud of how high they climbed.<br />

The reservoir is gorgeous! I've read that it can be quite crowded during the year, but we had a great time. Pack some water and snacks to enjoy by the water (and please bring your trash back with you.)<br />

Is the Lower Bell Canyon hike a good choice for you? This is for older kids or adventurous younger ones with some experience. It wasn't my kids favorite - too hot, too high and no animals. But I'm sure in a few years, we will be back to catch some fish!Jenny Rodriguezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06806819386942652673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1368951258114672096.post-83785460059494863682015-06-09T11:07:00.001-06:002015-06-09T11:07:41.321-06:00Hiking with Kids in Utah - Lisa Falls<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The last time I hiked Lisa Falls, I was 7 months pregnant with Julie and chasing after a very rebellious 2 year old Isabelle. It wasn't fun. Maybe that's why it's been a couple years since I considered going back and I am so glad we did!<br />
<br />
Lisa Falls is a very short hike off the road in<a href="http://alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/lisa-falls-trail"> Little Cottonwood.</a> Though it is a short hike, it is rocky and travels near the falls. I don't recommend toddlers walking this trail without very close supervision, my husband carried our two year old son. He was pretty scared of the rushing water and didn't want to walk on his own. There was another family there that had a young baby strapped on to their backs and she looked so happy!<br />
<br />
It is however fun for slightly older kids - our 5 and 7 year old had a blast! Be sure to pack swimsuits, towels and water shoes. The girls had the best time playing in the water.<br />
<br />

<br />
There were a few times I wanted to jump in and protect them, but they had so much fun exploring and playing in the water. It is a good time to go over water safety with children though, the falls can be strong during certain times of the year.<br />
<br />

<br />
And well, you can't hike near falls with two princesses and not have a mermaid photo shoot!<br />

Two thumbs up for Lisa Falls! Just watch those real little ones on the trail and maybe not for pregnant Mommas (or at least it was too much for me a few years ago!)<br />

<br />
I have never seen myself as an avid hiker. Though I love the wilderness, it just has never been high on my favorites thing to do. Well that is until I became a mother. That is one of the best things of being a parent, exploring the world through new sets of eyes. Have you tried hiking with your kids? There are so many awesome reasons to make this a regular excursion with them!<br />
<br />
*Kids are natural explorers. They want to see new places, climb big boulders and spot animals (even if it is just a chipmunk) in the wild. They want to learn in a fun environment.<br />
<br />
*Hiking is typically free. There are times when parks will charge a minimal fee, but this is such an inexpensive way to spend the day.<br />
<br />
*Kids need to burn off energy. Hiking allows them chances to run, to climb and wear themselves out. You may find that you are rewarded with fabulous naps after your hikes.<br />
<br />
*Instead of yelling or bribing your kids to remove themselves from technology, hiking is a fun way to accomplish that without an argument. You may find that the more your kids love the outdoors, the less you hear the electronic sounds.<br />
<br />
This summer, I will be posting my reviews of hikes with kids in the local Northern Utah area. Please feel free to chime in with your favorite places to hike!<br />

<br />
Last week we started our season off with a favorite of ours, <a href="http://climb-utah.com/WM/silver.htm">Silver Lake</a>. Hands down, I think this is the best beginner hike with kids that I have found. The hike around the lake is about an hour at a slow speed - the perfect time for my kids (2,5,7). It is common to spot moose and beavers. On our trip we only saw chipmunks and squirrels though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik_ADpFj28Qra9SgixuDXKpT4l5mmIZJRT6P0r4ebcsxOWYdgdwzsfjWZSKjFQej5zrzNe1B2IYu2wCA4SGDTUfrpiAolXcbDnYoniBew40SCJcTsFkYEwXv6tYz6kAodnnOMcoC3o5lA/s1600/IMG_5092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik_ADpFj28Qra9SgixuDXKpT4l5mmIZJRT6P0r4ebcsxOWYdgdwzsfjWZSKjFQej5zrzNe1B2IYu2wCA4SGDTUfrpiAolXcbDnYoniBew40SCJcTsFkYEwXv6tYz6kAodnnOMcoC3o5lA/s640/IMG_5092.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I recommend packing the kid cameras, bug collectors and jackets. Here the kids spotted a beaver dam on one side of the lake and a lodge on the other.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaBy4x0cs8CvpArJw4QBaheNFci1wDoGw-Fc04Kq_UDC9SJadjaZ4JnEzbbMM9h5cC1YlXs9_vAlcLV_MITzMiK-OB5hHQ_fC903s61GsXLnF9K5miW-RTQp-gc1_Z9bL-xQtqLUGkkf4/s1600/IMG_5093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaBy4x0cs8CvpArJw4QBaheNFci1wDoGw-Fc04Kq_UDC9SJadjaZ4JnEzbbMM9h5cC1YlXs9_vAlcLV_MITzMiK-OB5hHQ_fC903s61GsXLnF9K5miW-RTQp-gc1_Z9bL-xQtqLUGkkf4/s640/IMG_5093.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The path is quite large and safe with little elevation gain. You could easily push a jogging stroller on the path (we saw at least a 1/2 dozen that morning).<br />
<br />
It is a wonderful shaded hike that is a cool respite from the valley during the hotter months. I recommend if you prefer a more peaceful time, plan on hiking early in the morning. Around lunch time, the parking lot is full and the lake is chirping with lots of little voices.<br />
<br />
Two kiddo thumbs up for Silver Lake!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cactus are so hot right now! I lived in Arizona for over a decade and I hated them. I moved there from the California coast at 16 - right in the middle of my high school years. I hated everything about our new home, as many teenagers would after a move. But in time I grew to love the desert. I love the monsoon season, I love the color contrast and I love the complete quiet that can be found. My husband is a desert man and I know he misses it. Lately with the cactus craze, I've been painting more cacti and the other day I had an idea to make a cactus cake bite. Now you can too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What you will need:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of the super mini cake cones</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of any shade of cocoa candy melts (or you could temper chocolate)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of mini marshmallows</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of graham crackers</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of Oreo - S'mores (though you could use any flavor - I just thought this went the best with the other flavors)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of vanilla frosting (again, you could use any flavor)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 package of green candy melts</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
assorted sprinkles, sanding sugar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RDXVzel-yBhjeBsCLZNnYOnJiDqtra6f9teG9H06WA3jwRVqXPdmlECLSFVcvf1faAO0HFnfA7jgO9fij8tq36fEnlcjQX6_aztve86TqOUmTy17lb2xV9krSHpaLdgtwyoPyZ5Oqvg/s1600/IMG_5158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="624" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RDXVzel-yBhjeBsCLZNnYOnJiDqtra6f9teG9H06WA3jwRVqXPdmlECLSFVcvf1faAO0HFnfA7jgO9fij8tq36fEnlcjQX6_aztve86TqOUmTy17lb2xV9krSHpaLdgtwyoPyZ5Oqvg/s640/IMG_5158.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love these super mini cake cones - I keep finding new ways to use them. They are the perfect base for cake bites.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slowly melt your cocoa candy melts. The bags give directions on how to melt in the microwave, but I adore my double boiler. Either way, once they are melted you will want to dip each cone in the chocolate and set to the side to harden. Don't fuss too much about any imperfections; they are to imitate pots and rarely those are perfect.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7rfSOTl3pQmtrZO5ujEgL-wJjInkeo-KoSxuoddsOThVBdFqqbvCfHJdpSH_dv4umVlYODbdXR0vXiR_kQBMhTKJQrvdDzrE0BPJWAJEWKZhpIjkmY3gysH3fw034Q00zNA1jT7ebfGg/s1600/IMG_5160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7rfSOTl3pQmtrZO5ujEgL-wJjInkeo-KoSxuoddsOThVBdFqqbvCfHJdpSH_dv4umVlYODbdXR0vXiR_kQBMhTKJQrvdDzrE0BPJWAJEWKZhpIjkmY3gysH3fw034Q00zNA1jT7ebfGg/s640/IMG_5160.JPG" width="406" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I let mine sit over night and work on them the next morning. With a sharp paring knife, you can trim down the base to help it sit right. You can also shave any really big areas of too much chocolate. Save the extra bits of chocolate - you will need them in just a minute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjotnHZI9HFHEaRolBNeD3GAJw5OrJHNWN6t07muJcbpN9mWxKVfbCNNmSRcKvZdVcFTVkY-h8hsUgVAt8mkP8yFeULnv5fYkgTWSka4CUxcTA1K_uaM8U3mn_bALEfGCHdNvWHjHoN90/s1600/IMG_5164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjotnHZI9HFHEaRolBNeD3GAJw5OrJHNWN6t07muJcbpN9mWxKVfbCNNmSRcKvZdVcFTVkY-h8hsUgVAt8mkP8yFeULnv5fYkgTWSka4CUxcTA1K_uaM8U3mn_bALEfGCHdNvWHjHoN90/s640/IMG_5164.JPG" width="524" /></a></div>
<br />
Stuff mini marshmallows down into the pot. This will help weight it and allow it to sit. It's also a yummy surprise once the cake bite has been devoured.<br />
<br />
*You could also use gummi bears or any other favorite small candy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDKOIaLen6YzRKrbUcM7BX-EC6YylOoH_bOlks6zjZDCoVCaIQa2upS4noteJchLHY3TUO7zbzdgHVld5BKnElMXjzoU1g7Zs1V36n90VBLuzXobL_ZFAdPy2oKj1ntjEyzwXA8p2IUKo/s1600/IMG_5214.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDKOIaLen6YzRKrbUcM7BX-EC6YylOoH_bOlks6zjZDCoVCaIQa2upS4noteJchLHY3TUO7zbzdgHVld5BKnElMXjzoU1g7Zs1V36n90VBLuzXobL_ZFAdPy2oKj1ntjEyzwXA8p2IUKo/s640/IMG_5214.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Melt the extra chocolate candy wafers and cover the pot tops. Before it hardens, sprinkle crushed graham cracker on top. This will be the gravel or soil.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJs7woaZ6RNj4qcuKH5gyyei7rAIzZU07vhsV1n8MXOotVVfwGTLQAWRO8bl6t18VxM9RunzHA5ufpLYRN-1VttcLAInppWPSvCE5Bo2a2JQ3NpzHskJ-Q4tu2Y0pidGZ6PUATwf525s/s1600/IMG_5215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJs7woaZ6RNj4qcuKH5gyyei7rAIzZU07vhsV1n8MXOotVVfwGTLQAWRO8bl6t18VxM9RunzHA5ufpLYRN-1VttcLAInppWPSvCE5Bo2a2JQ3NpzHskJ-Q4tu2Y0pidGZ6PUATwf525s/s640/IMG_5215.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Drop all the Oreo crackers into a Cuisinart and blend until they are all crumbled up. Since it has the creamy filling, they will be slightly moist. Now you will add a dollop or two of the vanilla frosting. You want just enough frosting that the Oreo mixture will stick together like clay, but you do not want it too sticky!<br />

There isn't a perfect amount of frosting - it depends on how many cookies you start with, the weather, etc.. I would start with a couple big spoonfuls and blend. Check until it's the desired consistency.<br />

Shape the Oreo cake dough into the desired cactus shapes. Check out pictures of the real plant, look at clipart, and other cactus art. Try to vary the shape - you may find some are easier to work with than others. And then place in the fridge for 20-40 minutes (do not place in freezer!)<br />
<br />
*When you are shaping the cake bite, gently test it on the pot to see if it is a good proportion.<br />

I love to bake. I would bake all day, every day if I could. I don't love having sweets at home every day though. My toddler knows where fresh baked cookies cool and he stands in front of the shelf, pointing and begging. Sigh. So I love it when I have a reason to bake for OTHER people and we can keep just a couple as a treat.</div>

In light of the devastation in Nepal from the destructive earthquakes,<a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/251968756550?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649"> I have set up an auction on Ebay for this mixed media art piece. According to UNICEF, right now in Ne</a>pal there are 12 babies born every hour without basic healthcare. This means that 18,000 newborns and mothers will be at mortal risk over the next couple of months. As a mother, this is devastating and I want to do something.<br />
<br />
Please consider bidding on this art piece or sharing the information with someone that may be interested. Every single dollar with be donated to UNICEF. Together we can help make a difference.<br />

The skull pattern was generously donated by The Quilted Fish. If you would like to purchase it, <a href="http://www.thequiltedfishpatterns.com/shop/Patterns-/p/La-Vie-Boheme-Embroidery-x7121994.htm">please click here for more information.</a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My second daughter is finishing up her last year of preschool at a traditional school - in a few months, I will be homeschooling her as well. As excited as we are to have all our babies at home, we will truly miss this preschool and everyone there! She's made so many friends that we will be keeping in touch with for play-dates. I wanted to make those cutie pies a small end-of-the year treat for them on their last day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I searched high and low on Pinterest for end of the school year cookie ideas, but just didn't find any that knocked me out. Originally I was going to do a beach ball - for "Have a ball this summer!", but I wasn't hooked on it. I started to see a lot of Popsicle cookies on my Instagram feed and thought that would be fun. I added my own little spin and made them Kawaii Popsicles. I'll be adding a little watercolor tag on them - "Stay Cool This Summer!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For these cookies, I used my cookie artist idol, <a href="http://www.artymcgoo.com/blog/2014/6/16/raspberry-almond-roll-out-cookies">Arty Mcgoo's Roll-Out Cookie recipe. </a> When I roll out cookies, I always roll between two sheets of parchment, this reduces adding more flour to the dough. I also use <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Hills-Pin-Rings/dp/B000I1ZXBC">1/4" roller bands</a> - this will give you consistent thickness.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And here's a tidbit for you, a tombstone cookie cutter from Halloween will make a perfect Popsicle shape!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgllT8USeIDQ5iw0zxM0uc8qIlnOd1LsxMSDbABYfjhhdVRtxFVhJLShmq5w10of8C1ecxI6m-3DJriNj1_mCZ2E7KJ5-LKZq4eidWP9wyafBaIz0l3x_CqNan6mCi5h-xPGqVBpBjISjk/s1600/image2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgllT8USeIDQ5iw0zxM0uc8qIlnOd1LsxMSDbABYfjhhdVRtxFVhJLShmq5w10of8C1ecxI6m-3DJriNj1_mCZ2E7KJ5-LKZq4eidWP9wyafBaIz0l3x_CqNan6mCi5h-xPGqVBpBjISjk/s640/image2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I really wanted to make these cookie pops - that adds a huge part of the whole Popsicle idea, right? I can not shove those sticks in nicely. I've tried a bunch and read many articles, but it's always a disaster. So here's what I do. Once the cookies are completely cooled - like the next day - I spread a thick layer of melted candy wafers on the *back* of the cookie, gently sink in your stick and cover with a heaping spoon of more melted candy. You can smooth it out much better than I did, but it's the back and it's candy - I figure no child is going to care or complain, right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi04qGVp1OLhxqXgjHvSQENswACIDY2erkSqi6xICuQigszgee7BsxULwhqpO45S5LFXL9GUfua8VH9OxF6WF7sp6-C9bnPhln6ZlSqrqlZcoBK3Rzk6G1vhtREIONIqHkx47xRBVc4qjI/s1600/image1+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi04qGVp1OLhxqXgjHvSQENswACIDY2erkSqi6xICuQigszgee7BsxULwhqpO45S5LFXL9GUfua8VH9OxF6WF7sp6-C9bnPhln6ZlSqrqlZcoBK3Rzk6G1vhtREIONIqHkx47xRBVc4qjI/s640/image1+(1).JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I decorated using<a href="http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2010/01/royal-icing-102-or-201-or-whatever.html"> Bake at 350's Royal Icing recipe.</a> I use the original recipe for piping the sides,ice shading, eyes and smile. You will need to thin it down to flood the cookie. Once it has dried, I painted on a bit of light corn syrup and sprinkled clear sanding sugar.<br />
<br />
All done! They just need to be wrapped in cellophane, tied with a ribbon and note.<br />
<br />
Stay Cool!<br />

I can't believe my first born turned 7 a few months ago. It honestly seems like just yesterday when I could feel her kick in my belly at the sound of her Daddy talking. She has always been an old soul though - full of wisdom and kindness. Those who know her, know she exudes a sunshine that is unique. My sweet girl requested a Frozen birthday and I did my best to accommodate!</div>

The kids took home a goody bag of white & blue rock candy wands because I'm sure they needed more sugar in their life.. Sorry parents!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
It was a wonderful birthday and party. These childhood years fly by, I will never regret making a big deal on their special day.<br />
<br />
Now, can we let it go?Jenny Rodriguezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06806819386942652673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1368951258114672096.post-19354726046422795302015-05-17T21:32:00.000-06:002015-05-17T21:32:00.436-06:00Learn How To Surf<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I worked this up today in watercolor for the prompt of skill.<br />
<br />
Learning how to roll with life's waves is a necessary skill, but not one we are born with. Our lives have been so crazed since last June. We've had so much turmoil and strife in our inner circle. Sadly, the trend has not ceased, but we have learned to surf holding hands and waiting for the waves to cease.<br />

Some of the pieces I have been working on in my sketchbook...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was for the daily prompt of - Mom. It's a watercolor based off my last maternity photo shoot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWIJ5aFwX3KXWMfBYvKhWUgSaYL5BjmRyN6LBBGmj-rRa3fsCHm2_EF9J-33FW_1aj_CllDiBX-5LuwIINMgRn5E76f3CoN_77CjjjqE-Rxm92AKBUIur4zZAaK9zXitw5nL4hSer9yd8/s1600/IMG_4694.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWIJ5aFwX3KXWMfBYvKhWUgSaYL5BjmRyN6LBBGmj-rRa3fsCHm2_EF9J-33FW_1aj_CllDiBX-5LuwIINMgRn5E76f3CoN_77CjjjqE-Rxm92AKBUIur4zZAaK9zXitw5nL4hSer9yd8/s640/IMG_4694.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This one I chose to do on a canvas with acrylics. It's titled "Yesterday" - a nostalgic memory to keep the wonder of childhood alive. It will be listed in my Etsy shop next week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgls7KipLP1PWH63duqFpyQYW_ZBE5XhXscjWhWkocAtgynFgTz0nYQEznO8hSjOblxpSDtPbFMKRbxIKM26h2n2AlAoaIZm_AyMCocWEFaR0F2CRvBHD0GqvSJivNTVMP1Pxm6mdGJkSU/s1600/IMG_4717.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgls7KipLP1PWH63duqFpyQYW_ZBE5XhXscjWhWkocAtgynFgTz0nYQEznO8hSjOblxpSDtPbFMKRbxIKM26h2n2AlAoaIZm_AyMCocWEFaR0F2CRvBHD0GqvSJivNTVMP1Pxm6mdGJkSU/s640/IMG_4717.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A different style for the daily prompt of something that starts with the letter L. In the end a lot of people choose a lion. This was a watercolor and pen sketch in the sketchbook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnUKZGlhyphenhyphend_4au1intu2JMtcPuw_WjdAlw_5AamD-bdAUi1S0ipU3TZg-mSiZ_oCd89ANoljZTM8963M6L3eVeYlKLRpmh5Xb-jhkZPl_p_12ZR5ph3uN1BfqbCw2T8Lhc2gX-wxgmgKc/s1600/IMG_4723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnUKZGlhyphenhyphend_4au1intu2JMtcPuw_WjdAlw_5AamD-bdAUi1S0ipU3TZg-mSiZ_oCd89ANoljZTM8963M6L3eVeYlKLRpmh5Xb-jhkZPl_p_12ZR5ph3uN1BfqbCw2T8Lhc2gX-wxgmgKc/s640/IMG_4723.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
A watercolor and pen commentary on social media for the prompt of reward. In the end only we know if we have bent our personalities to fit a mold. It's something I fight against on a regular basis.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUojW92DzF67kTt4LU-iFjSyV95HZQ3jQo31AWJDLkPaWKLY-YVQsOZULSy1n-oDthn2eeRQ4yLqSleCAinQok-82DpArViH0VeM2eNoFypDThGRuWT85ZvvP61V2e_-qUD1VY334Dyss/s1600/IMG_4790.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUojW92DzF67kTt4LU-iFjSyV95HZQ3jQo31AWJDLkPaWKLY-YVQsOZULSy1n-oDthn2eeRQ4yLqSleCAinQok-82DpArViH0VeM2eNoFypDThGRuWT85ZvvP61V2e_-qUD1VY334Dyss/s640/IMG_4790.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this last piece is in progress. A tiny vignette of retro Disneyland was more work than I anticipated - lots more more layers and details to do, but it does make me happy. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVoIizDse60m43DNry7sCVZkLT5UBcNrCWONuFfXExPMSj5lVRk8sWRM2PjhBjIwlSlQN6KypVXPX8LVu6wdwVLmIHRhvER5QfZD5Y40eWsuVoRUI4BLuzbgvi4BU6Cq-_he9ZVs7weXg/s1600/IMG_4492.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVoIizDse60m43DNry7sCVZkLT5UBcNrCWONuFfXExPMSj5lVRk8sWRM2PjhBjIwlSlQN6KypVXPX8LVu6wdwVLmIHRhvER5QfZD5Y40eWsuVoRUI4BLuzbgvi4BU6Cq-_he9ZVs7weXg/s1600/IMG_4492.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every year the <a href="http://www.allianceforamericanquilts.org/">Quilt Alliance</a> has a contest and auction to raise money for their nonprofit organization. They were established in 1993 with the intention of documenting, preserving and sharing the American quilting heritage. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have participated in their contest every year since I first discovered it in 2010. Creating a quilt based on their theme always invigorates me and brings me back into quilting. This year the theme was, "The Animals We Love." Recently we have frequently watched the Mexico themed movie, "Book of Life". After chatting with my husband, who is of Mexican ancestry, we came up with the idea of a sugar skull bull, a Muerto Toro.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started the quilts with improvisational piecing of black and white fabric. I wanted the background to be neutral, but also have contrast to the bright colors that would be placed next.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhryrGdxAYgD8CEVzfNqKS7m_eafiq5G-CaTbVRAvGEunUA9KejeRZOSPdAo4cXkMLUnXDNiysAyUAi9a540VREojg-SR71tHBZTEUdsHQm3kYgzs1zmt3C-7qU0sMw9JEwFgBrnh3v7Dc/s1600/IMG_3826.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhryrGdxAYgD8CEVzfNqKS7m_eafiq5G-CaTbVRAvGEunUA9KejeRZOSPdAo4cXkMLUnXDNiysAyUAi9a540VREojg-SR71tHBZTEUdsHQm3kYgzs1zmt3C-7qU0sMw9JEwFgBrnh3v7Dc/s1600/IMG_3826.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I freehand cut the basic shape and large shaded areas of the bull face in bright, fanciful colors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-BseLz9Rs12zMpZMTbuv6oK9pELs2U-qa9F2fq-7JuURFDqHolc0-i7dv5B-yMN0OkCW0zuqvPR2xVsG6GrQwGofO3Vp2k1Ab0i0Mfro3o0EVOAm9hrrLn_RUdtKc43zrtWsc-Ikg3Q/s1600/IMG_3830.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-BseLz9Rs12zMpZMTbuv6oK9pELs2U-qa9F2fq-7JuURFDqHolc0-i7dv5B-yMN0OkCW0zuqvPR2xVsG6GrQwGofO3Vp2k1Ab0i0Mfro3o0EVOAm9hrrLn_RUdtKc43zrtWsc-Ikg3Q/s1600/IMG_3830.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once I was happy with the general layout, the large pieces were machine appliqued on with matching thread. Then I freehand cut the small applique accents to the bull face.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip51jLhKMz3RPauSKhpwizO2RVC-za_sBOZ9ugnL7bZYI3Nct2HlPs8gqghOBVGWfXifQ_LG06nGL14cL_Ro2b7J2OXOtI1egewCzFJy-2si_GRBrk2BDd2ioQvhCE42BzXn29s2FRrPg/s1600/IMG_3845.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip51jLhKMz3RPauSKhpwizO2RVC-za_sBOZ9ugnL7bZYI3Nct2HlPs8gqghOBVGWfXifQ_LG06nGL14cL_Ro2b7J2OXOtI1egewCzFJy-2si_GRBrk2BDd2ioQvhCE42BzXn29s2FRrPg/s1600/IMG_3845.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
The background then became a little too quiet and I needed some color impact. I quickly drew out flying geese on a narrow strip of paper to foundation piece on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAMLPkzyrd6ar3Bd6d9uxEDa-tsW3uKOY8SELFITsVe9yNrQG92oK5us86dFZypiPNuVjo56i1hNGnDoRcUEbNDjN7V7OcVyhz2B2QZh-OcXTzK8j8Q0p9yzXMBgmGD9xlKMCq5wA7hVs/s1600/IMG_3848.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAMLPkzyrd6ar3Bd6d9uxEDa-tsW3uKOY8SELFITsVe9yNrQG92oK5us86dFZypiPNuVjo56i1hNGnDoRcUEbNDjN7V7OcVyhz2B2QZh-OcXTzK8j8Q0p9yzXMBgmGD9xlKMCq5wA7hVs/s1600/IMG_3848.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
That linear flying geese looked incredibly abrupt placed into the improved back. I did more chopping and moving so that it flowed better. The color shapes became representative of fans cheering the Toro on in the ring. Since marigolds are traditional at Dia de los Muertos, there is a giant bloom on Toro and petals thrown from the crowd. It is now realized that Toro is no longer a fighting hero, but has fallen and moved into the next world.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwCJSEnIoqlyoZT7rnA7di5wa5vACWR0m_r4HHvDLTh5imucLTmgJbm8Kttc092ikr4oBEYIOSLACaI82zsRyeo3rVkNVhioWjGLHF-fcgHKStAjvoQT03BkecrZiCHVUSQ4eXLI8jho/s1600/IMG_3864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwCJSEnIoqlyoZT7rnA7di5wa5vACWR0m_r4HHvDLTh5imucLTmgJbm8Kttc092ikr4oBEYIOSLACaI82zsRyeo3rVkNVhioWjGLHF-fcgHKStAjvoQT03BkecrZiCHVUSQ4eXLI8jho/s1600/IMG_3864.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All the small applique bits are hand embroidered on with perle cotton in unique touches.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Large Swarvoski beads are couched on to Toro's eye and falling tears.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bright and in your face graffiti machine quilting covers his face and the crowd. </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The remaining background of black and white are lovingly hand quilted in big strokes with perle cotton.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I love Toro and was sad to see him off, but I hope he raises lots of money for the Quilt Alliance. And I maybe fully intending on buying him back at the auction!<br />

My middle child is finishing up her last year of preschool before she starts homeschooling. We adore her school and will miss every one of the teachers and staff. Tomorrow there is an annual school picnic for the children and families. I volunteered to bring dessert of course, but had no idea what I was going to make. Cupcakes? Cookies? Popsicles? I searched Pinterest and found these adorable ice cream cone cake pops on <a href="http://www.lovebakesgoodcakes.com/2014/07/ice-cream-cone-cake-pops.html">Love Bake Good Cakes</a>. I immediately knew that they would be perfect for the picnic! I made mine a bit differently, but I love them both!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For my cake bites, I baked up a rich yellow, butter cake. Once it was cool, I crumbled it up in my KitchenAid with a good scoop of mini chocolate chips and just a bit of vanilla frosting. You want to know what it taste like? Just like it looks in the picture - dangerously delicious chocolate chip cookie batter. Oh my. Scoop up with a cookie dough baller and place in fridge for an hour or two.</div>

<br />
I melted a bunch of bright white candy melts, rolled the cake bite in and smooshed on top of a mini ice cream cake cone. Let it dry for a bit - if the "ice cream" melts down the side, I think it adds to the fun of it.<br />
<br />
Then melt some cocoa flavored candy melts, drizzle on top and adorn with sprinkles. They will harden for a few minutes and will be perfect for a picnic! I hope you try these and maybe change up the flavors. It would be kinda fun to place a gummy bear at the bottom of the cone (my favorite ice cream parlor used to do this when I was a kid)<br />

A good friend of mine asked me if I would be willing to teach a painting for her daughter's birthday party, like PaintNite for kids. I was so honored and excited to be asked. They picked a cupcake painting they found on Pinterest (I believe it was from <a href="http://www.karaspartyideas.com/">Kara's parties</a>) and I made up a sample before the party.<br />
<br />

Here they are hard at work on their backgrounds. I made it clear as I taught that they should embrace this painting as their own and make any changes that they wanted. I've never followed directions and wanted to give them the same freedom.<br />

Here are a couple of the finished paintings!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Each girl really expressed themselves and didn't feel pressure to be like another. They were loose with their painting and just had so much fun! Such a fun birthday!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And I've been on a bit of mini pinata/gift box kick and made this palette to hold the birthday girl's gift card.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
As many of you know, I'm not a fan of cake. I do however love cake pops - maybe it's because they are adorable small bites? Everything seems better when it is miniature, right? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you have never made them before, you need to spend an hour on <a href="http://www.bakerella.com/pops-bites/cake-pops/">Bakerella's website.</a> She also has a fabulous book out, aptly titled "Cake Pops." The biggest trick will be finding the right balance of mixing your cake with the frosting.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I wanted to try making some lemon slice and tea cup cake pops. Well once I start down a road, it usually takes new directions and I ended up with a whole slew of tea related pops. My daughter fought hard for the giant sugar cube one - I couldn't envision it at first, but it is one of my favorites!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For these pops, I baked up a lemon cake and mixed it with a bit of lemon frosting and lots of chopped maraschino cherries to create a delightful cherry lemonade flavor. So dang yum.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have to say though, that these lemon slices are my very favorite. Don't they just sing summer?</div>

<br />
I tried a few different ways to paint my teacups. These were done with melted coconut oil and a touch of candy colors. It dries with some texture and created perfect roses. You could also paint candy melts with candy color gel and a touch of vodka.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I can't show you any of my current Mother's Day projects - my Mum is my number one fan and maybe only reader, lol.<br />
<br />
But this tattoo inspired wreath is one of my favorite projects. I made it 4 years ago, but this picture was just taken today. It looks as fun as ever!<br />
<br />
Do you have a special wreath or door art for Mother's Day?<br />
And call your mother! She loves you and is worried about you. No really, call her..<br />

Will you be celebrating Cinco de Mayo?<br />
<br />
Today is not Mexico's Independence Day, it actually celebrates a battle from 1862 when a small group of the Mexican army defeated the French in Puebla.<br />
<br />
My husband's ancestry is Mexican and we will be celebrating tonight and this weekend (holidays on Tuesdays are the pits!)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jenniferbelle/5687041766/">I have a free printable for you!</a> You can quickly download and print for your holiday display. This would be a great discussion starter for children interested in Mexico's history.<br />

<br />
Tonight I will be getting together with my stitching group and I plan on making these<a href="http://desertchica.com/2015/04/churro-cupcakes/"> churro cupcakes from Desert Chica.</a> Don't they look so amazing?<br />
<br />

<br />
And of course some fresh margaritas. I made these last weekend and they were insanely good. You can find the <a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2014/05/blackberry-margaritas/">recipe on The Pioneer Woman</a> (take her advice and add a bit more sugar in the blender unless you want them tart.)<br />

<br />
Have you joined the Resistance? We are huge Star Wars fans and proud members of the Rebel Scum. When a dear friend asked if I could create a Princess Leia cap for her baby girl's photo shoot, I jumped at the chance. This crocheted hat is adorable, simple, and you can create it during a nap! Don't crochet? No problem, you could also adapt this to a pre-purchased knit or crocheted hat.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" height="285" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668406348449356562" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj9baPBdTakYAMpd7orI6CCnxH32_Q7gvmEqY_MSv7RNjVGnD5nPr3jQWtjVkhdvDszxcPOC5uMrL8olQtVne5IgDrWUlbkSskxe1vveC18f5I3e0EzEaoCAxBT9c5jUVyYH6WNiCgB_mB/s400/DSC_0060.JPG" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: left;" width="400" /><br />
If you love to crochet, but need an easy beenie pattern, I found a fabulous one over at <a href="http://www.leftinknots.com/home/2016/9/4/double-crochet-hat-in-10-sizes">Left In Knots.</a> There are multiple sizes, you could create matching Princess Leia caps for May the 4th!<br />
I used a dark brown acrylic yarn, easy to wash and durable for little kids. I used <a href="http://amzn.to/2q1gQAG">Vanna's Choice in Chocolate.</a><br />
<br /></div>
<div>
Next you will cut 36 pieces of yarn measuring one yard. Pull out that yard stick and let the kiddos help. It doesn't have to be crazy accurate. Divide the stack in half - two sets of 18 pieces. Now with each set you will create a large braid - 3 groups of 6. Just a traditional braid - again, you could enlist you kiddos to help with this. It's a fabulous fine motor activity.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668406352383909442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAxKIs-My0TbfpQYQKB6CjXn9vt1LTHgPhJXjPcWoHCZD8nTq7gZyRlng1vX9LXH1DDtPvehpRTjlUDqxStNctpYYAq5VXmjnZ2kjQqN8ubG91fDZmea12NBAi95VijKd5g2ZISm5MiVSl/s400/DSC_0064.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 268px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then gently roll the braid into what kind of looks like a cinnamon roll. Using a yarn needle and another long piece of yarn, sew the bun layers together. Make it nice and tight, don't worry about the seams showing - it all blends in.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Place the beanie on and decide placement of the braid buns, but they are basically low to the cuff and centered. Sew them on and call it a day!</div>

Isn't my friend's baby the most adorable Princess Leia ever? You can easily adapt this into any size. I'm considering making myself one for snowboarding season!</div>

<br />
If you live in Northern Utah, chances are you have been to Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. There are so many fun adventures waiting there for children and adults. One of our favorite events is the <a href="http://www.thanksgivingpoint.org/events/tulip_festival">Tulip Festival in the Gardens.</a> The Gardens are over 55 acres and feature more than 250,000 tulips! You can even rent a golf cart or segway to move about quicker if desired. It's open for another week or so, if haven't made your trip there yet.<br />
